Freehiking Barefoot, Part Two

I enjoyed my barefoot hike so much on Thursday that I decided to try it again on Saturday. It was a chilly morning in the high fifties, but after a few minutes I was feeling pretty comfortable as I started the climb up the trails.

When I got to the horse meadow I again took off my shoes, and probably did about a mile barefoot, around the horse meadow and the overlook trail. It had rained the night before, so the ground was cold and damp, with squishy leaves. It was completely exhilarating. Feeling all the sensations of nature through the soles of your feet adds more than merely another dimension to the hiking experience, it transforms it.

And after the second barefoot hike, my feet once again showed no signs of abrasion, and were not tender. Maybe I'm already toughening them up.

This morning about 8 AM I decided to go for another hike, but the temperature was only about 50 degrees, probably colder in the woods. I went for it anyway. Initially I was pretty chilly being completely nude except for hiking sandals and a fanny pack, but as I began the climb up the trails, I began to warm up, and jogged part of the way to fire up the furnace.

I went about three miles, and when I got back, only my hands were a bit chilly. The above photo was taken about an hour after I got back to the trailer. Again, completely exhilarating.

Next year I will be helping with the maintenance of the paths at Cedar Trails and will keep barefooting in mind for anyone who wants to try it. Again, be careful before you try something like this, because injury is a real possibility, especially on public paths.

Taking It All Off at Cedar Trails in Ohio

My favorite nudist campground gets a nice profile in today's Cincinnati CityBeat.

Cedar Trails residents insist nude recreation camps are fiercely family-oriented and note the misconceptions about nudists, such as nudist colonies being a Petri dish for lewd and lascivious behavior, are often wrong.

“(Nudism has) been excellent for our relationship,” (member LaVerne) McGowan says. “This place is very couple oriented and relationship oriented.”

(Owner) Jo Anne Roessler is aware how nudists are perceived, but she insists the nudist lifestyle is less sexualized than plain-clothed society.

“You’re going to find that you’re far more comfortable here,” she says. “It’s a different atmosphere.”

A weekend outdoors in the nude is a prescription that every doctor should write.

Armed with lots of sunscreen, a new tent with all the accoutrements, and a cooler full of bottled water, my wife and I drove down to Cedar Trails Nudist Retreat in Ohio for a couple of days of glorious sunshine.

The weather on Saturday morning was extremely iffy with clouds and light showers over Columbus, but in weather.com we must trust, and the promise of 87 degree sunny skies in the afternoon put us in the car and on the road.

Fred and Jo Anne run a lovely, laid-back campground on 60 acres in Adams County, perhaps the prettiest area in Ohio. After pitching the tent, we began our visit by hiking up to the horse meadow and along the overlook by the Serpent Mound meteor crater. The hiking trails here are well-maintained and clearly marked, and new painted wood markers have been added this year. Kudos to the members who have lovingly worked on these fine trails, over three miles in all.

To me, walking about nude in nature is the ultimate naturist experience. Setting aside the obvious insect irritations (use some bug spray), listening to the sounds of the birds and the rustling trees without the icky feeling of clothing sticking to your skin is sublime. On Sunday morning my wife was not up for another walk, so I went by myself, and being totally alone, completely nude (except for my socks and shoes), and standing over the meteor crater looking at the vista is something I will always remember. No cell phone, no wallet, no keys, no worries.

If all I could say was one thing about Cedar Trails, it would be about the friendliness of the people. This is a very outgoing and welcoming crowd, and although the numbers were fewer than usual, probably due to the uncertainty of the weather, everyone greeted us with a smile.

The centerpiece of the retreat is the pool and the adjacent CT Cafe, where the owners cook food to order at lunch and dinner on weekends. Soft drinks, bottled water, coffee and bags of ice are available on the honor system, just put your cash in the jar. That alone tells you a lot about this place.

The 20x40 heated pool is not large or deep enough for diving or serious swimming, but it's a great area for socializing and keeping cool on a hot afternoon. There's plenty of grass for sunbathing, bring your own lounge chair and umbrella. There are plenty of floats and pool toys available, and it doesn't take the kids too long to find the super soakers. There's a corn hole game on the lawn, and darts and billiards under the cafe roof, so there's plenty to do besides sunbathe. The retreat boasts about its volleyball court with cedar ships as a base, but it was just too hot for anyone to start a game this weekend.

A planned afternoon scavenger hunt had to be scrapped due to the small crowd on Saturday, but a fundraising bingo game and 50s dance event went on as planned from 8 PM until midnight in the cafe. Yes, bingo sounds lame, but it turned out to be lots of fun, with fun and practical prizes for all the winners, plus 50% of the pot went to the lucky winner of the final game. The other half of the pot went to a fund for building a deck on the north side of the pool.

The dance featured an evening long trivia game, and my wife and I both won AANR t-shirts for our efforts. During one game of pool, my wife cleared the table and made a spectacular 8-ball shot to end the game, prompting high-fives all around.

For anyone contemplating nude recreation, Cedar Trails is an ideal place to start because of the friendliness of the people and the sheer size of the retreat. The no-pressure, laid-back atmosphere is perfect for total relaxation. For us, the only negative aspect of our visit was having to put on clothes to come home.

Get Over It

A reader made the following comment on my Nudist Photo of the Day blog:

You've been heavy on the women for the last week or so... Mix it up a bit.

I know that there are probably more photos of women out there. And I know that you have a photo blog dedicated to the men and another dedicated to couples. I'd recommend using this blog to show more groups of mixed gender, which is a better sample of what being a nudist is all about.

Artists and photographers have put the female form on a pedestal since the first cave drawings. One cannot go through any art museum without seeing more nudes of women than of men.

But it is precisely because vintage nudist photos are so gender imbalanced that I started the Adam and Eve and Nudist Men blogs.

I've heard this critcism before. Some nudists and naturists, especially TNS members, hold themselves to a more elitist standard, to a Utopian vision where people of all ages, genders, races and sexual preference frolic in the fields without a care in the world.

Well nudism and naturism aren't that neat.

You want gender balance? Try starting with the vast majority of landed and non-landed clubs which struggle every day to attract more women. In Columbus, Ohio, local swims are about 5-to-1 men, sometimes greater. Most clubs have given up on the gender balance issue because they so desperately need members that they now accept single men. There are also quite a few "men only" naturist clubs and resorts - do you know of any "women only" groups?

You want racial balance? Try starting with the AANR and TNS publications which are show tons of pretty pink people engaging in naturist activities, but virtually no people of color. One can argue that nudist organizations are guilty of institutional racism since they make no effort to balance the ethnic and racial makup of their membership.

You want age balance? Try starting with the AANR and TNS publications which have all but phased out images of anyone under the age of 18. At Green Valley where I was one of over 200 nude people in the pool, there was only one child - a toddler in diapers. Children are rapidly disappearing from this "family-friendly" lifestyle, which is being threatened by sexed-up resorts like Caliente, and a society increasingly believing that any nude image of a child is somehow pornographic.

And naturists patronizing swinger clubs certainly doesn't add any credibility to the purist argument.

Personally I love the vintage nudist photos, despite the obvious gender imbalance. They're fun, kitschy, and often beautiful in their simplicity and playful innocence. They are visual evidence of a time gone by, lost to the sexual revolution, feminism, and other cultural shifts.

So "get over it."

Yesterday was visitor appreciation day at Green Valley nudist resort in Ohio, and combined with the AANR Guinness World Record Skinny-Dip event, it turned out to be a spectacular day.

My wife and I arrived at 11 AM, just as the clouds opened up drenching the campground in torrential rain. A man in the office assured us that the line of thundershowers would pass through quickly, and when the sun came out an hour later the temperature jumped from 69 to the mid-seventies, and eventually up to 80 later in the afternoon.

The folks at Green Valley deserve thanks and congratulations for the terrific job they did all day. Members doing security duty in golf carts were everywhere, the people could not have been friendlier, and new visitors were made to feel welcome and at home right away.

Shortly after the skies cleared, members fired up the grill for free hamburgers and hot dogs, with delicious potato and pasta salads provided as sides. Even the beer was free!

Inside the clubhouse was a bake sale and silent auction, and the resort sold raffle tickets for prizes, proceeds to be used for a defibrillator.

Naturally, all activity revolved around the pool, and as 3 PM approached a count was initiated and people began wading into the pool. 213 nude and happy people waved to photographers as a new world record was set.

So thank you everyone at Green Valley for a successful and truly fun event. We can't wait to come back!

Going Nude in Public? Don't Do It Alone

Tony Cooper, the 66 year-old man who took a naked stroll through Ashland, Oregon, last month, did not break any laws, but his wandering into a school zone wearing only tennis shoes has people calling for a ban on public nudity.

Cooper said he didn't realize he was near a school and didn't intend for the kids there to see him. "That was my mistake," he said. "I messed up completely."..."People in Ashland seem to be very paranoid about kids," he said. "I think they should all send their kids to a nudist resort or have naked day in Ashland where everyone is naked. Then all of those hang-ups would disappear."

In a society so heavily-invested in clothing and body shame, it's not a good idea for one individual to push the envelope on public nudity. Even though Cooper might actually be a sincere nudist and body advocate, his unilateral actions will be perceived by most as kooky, or even perverted.

It's far better to organize groups of people for nude events, such as the World Naked Bike Ride, AANR's skinny-dipping event, or Spencer Tunick's nude photography installations.

When Tunick was taking photos of only a handful of nude people on city streets, he was being arrested. Now that he has thousands of participants, he receives police protection, and is welcomed wherever he goes.

While some cities such as Boulder are still resisting full nudity in the WNBR, the protest event seems to be picking up steam around the world with more and more people participating. This year in London around 1200 riders bared all to being awareness about oil dependency.

And the city of Fremont seems to really love the naked bike riders who kick off the annual Solstice Parade.

After an attempt to exclude nudity from the annual Bay to Breakers run in San Francisco, the numbers of people protesting were so great that organizers backed down and there were more naked people than ever strolling through Golden Gate Park.

Women's topfreedom in Columbus has become a true tradition at the annual Comfest event at a downtown park, and this year I observed more topfree women than ever before. The silly argument that the sight of nude female breasts is somehow harmful to children is debunked in Ohio every year as tons of children frolic in Goodale Park completely oblivious to the women not wearing shirts.

It's going to take more and more mass demonstrations of body freedom before society truly adapts to the idea that exposure of skin is neither shameful nor perverted. It makes me wonder if all the well-intentioned work of the Naturist Action Committee in pursuing legal actions for hot spots such as Huntington Beach and San Onofre Beach in California wouldn't be better directed to organizing protest events to work on public perceptions.

It's logical to assume that a society willing to accept public nudity in downtown parks would embrace nakedness in it's most obvious and natural setting - a beach. What is needed is an army of a thousand people, all nude with body paint and protest signs, marching on San Onofre beach with members of the press in tow. What is needed is a thousand women, all bare breasted, descending unannounced onto a public beach to mingle with the suited multitudes until they blend in.

But going it alone isn't the way to win the hearts and minds of a public which has been ingrained with the notion that nudity is sexual, shameful, forbidden, dangerous, and illegal.

Topfreedom Thriving in Columbus, Ohio

Beautiful day today for Comfest in Columbus, Ohio, and I personally witnessed at least a dozen women enjoying topfree equality with the many men who also chose to be shirtless today. GoTopless.org had a booth with a couple of lovely topfree women handing out literature and inviting people to add comments to a log book. No children were alarmed or harmed, no men lost control over their sensibilities, and the earth did not stop turning.

Maybe it Wasn't the Nude Photo That Killed Jessie Logan

In a stunning news story, it has been revealed that the parents of Ohio teen Jessie Logan, who committed suicide last summer, never even brought up the subject of a nude photo during an investigation of their daughter's death.

Logan's parents have been waging war against lawmakers, educators and students, alleging that harassment and inaction over a nude photo Jessie took of herself led directly to the suicide, and have subsequently filed a lawsuit seeking damages from just about everybody involved. They even appeared alongside Ohio lawmakers who want to enact laws criminalizing teen sexting so that future suicides can be prevented.

It turns out that the family told investigators that Jessie was distraught over the suicide of a classmate, had recently broken up with her boyfriend, and, according to one uncle, might have been pregnant. Reportedly, the parents fought for months against releasing a blood sample for a pregnancy test, which they said was negative. But in the days following the girl's death, nobody in the family even mentioned the nude photo to investigators.

The whole affair is tragic -the loss of a young life, the pain felt by family and friends, and the unsolved questions which always remain after such a senseless death will continue to haunt all those close to Jessie for as long as they live.

It's human nature for people to seek answers for events which shatter their lives, but it is the responsibility of police, lawmakers, counselors, media types and other professionals to remain calm and rational in the face of runaway emotion. In the case of Jessie Logan, it appears that everyone took the nude photo story and ran with it, without even examining all the other factors which likely drove the teen to her sad decision. The nude photo made for sexier television, more sensational political fodder, and contained the degree of tawdriness necessary to make this an international story.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for those aged 15 to 24. It's clear that more preventative measures are needed, that parents, teachers and students need to be made more aware of the warning signs and how to deal with them before it's too late. With Jessie Logan, we may never know if she was giving off any warnings, and if those warnings were ignored or unrecognized, because the nude photo took center stage and captured all the attention.

Jessie's parents claim that it was "shock" which blocked out the nude photo in their minds when initially speaking to investigators, yet this "shock" didn't prevent them from coming up with several other reasons for the suicide.

Let's hope that this lawsuit is thrown out, that the Ohio law fails to pass, and all these people get back to trying to live their lives as best they can. I know what it's like to live with unspeakable tragedy, the loss and pain never completely leave, but life always goes on somehow, and time helps to smooth the road.

Society's tug-of-war over nudity, with Puritanical revulsion on one side and endless fascination on the other, is the root cause of making this story so sensational. Until we come to grips with the fact that we all have bodies, that we are essentially all the same underneath our clothes, we will continue to see this sort of irrational, unfounded and dangerous gut reaction to expressions of teen sexuality from the keepers of a repressed society.

Kenyon Women Fight for Topfree Equality

A story today in the Kenyon College Collegian newspaper describes how topfree women were kicked out of a "Shock Your Mom" party event on campus, which sparked a protest by a group calling itself "The Women Behind the Boobs", who hung photos of their own naked breasts along an area called Middle Path. A letter was circulated from the protesters, who said, "We love our bodies and we want you to see why! We just wonder why 'common decency' requires us to cover a part of our bodies that not only do men not have to cover, but that is a natural, integral part of ourselves."

According to students interviewed for the story, nudity at the annual event was expected, even though officially prohibited, and that the Campus Department of Safety decided to crack down this year. One student with flowers on her nipples was "grabbed by the shoulders" and told to leave.

According to (student Emma) Lippincott, between 50 and 75 women were involved in the demonstration in some way. While perhaps not all participants saw the demonstration as feminist, Lippincott said that she did. "For me, the true definition of feminism is about egalitarianism between the sexes," she said. "If one gender's chest is viewed as completely sexualized if it's exposed, if it's viewed as pornography when it's just breasts... that's an issue of equality."

Kenyon College is a liberal arts school with 1600 students located in Gambier, Ohio.

UPDATE: The Kenyon Collegian has an editorial supporting the students. It's a little awkwardly written but the point is clear.

We sympathize with the students who felt degraded by the comments they heard when they were asked to leave. Many students in the past have seen Shock Your Momma as an opportunity to expose themselves. These students find liberation in revealing their bodies in a relatively safe environment. When students feel as though they are invited into that environment and then they are pulled away from it, they may feel an understandable amount of shame from putting themselves out into exhilarating and uncomfortable nudity and being pulled away from it by a shaming force that says they are behaving inappropriately.

Sexting Hysteria Breeds Stupid Lawmaking

As predicted by Dr. Marty Klein, Ohio state and local legislators and law enforcement officials, accompanied by Cynthia Logan whose daughter committed suicide for reasons attributed to a nude photo she took of herself, are set to announce a new sexting law which specifically targets children. Make no mistake - if you are a parent in Ohio, your children will now be able to be arrested merely for being stupid sexually, and charged with a misdemeanor. As if our prisons are not already overcrowded with people incarcerated for drug possession and other pointless crimes, we are now plotting to put sexually curious children behind bars.

The answer is to change current child pornography laws so that children are not made victims of the very statutes which are supposed to protect them. Adding this new law that "would make teenagers sending sexually provocative or nude pictures of themselves or others a first degree misdemeanor" is a crime in itself. I find it astounding that so many public officials could actually think that they are protecting children by turning them into criminals, putting blemishes on their records which could keep them out of college or a job, prevent them from getting a loan, etc.

And who is going to decide the definition of "sexually provocative?" Any teenage girl who poses for a photo showing a little cleavage and making pouty lips could be arrested.

In one respect, it's correct that these lawmakers feel that making sex offenders out of children is wrong, But this is not the way to correct a system gone awry.

So what's next? Teens caught half-naked in their cars on lover's lane will be locked up and charged with a crime? What about a teen who gets pregnant after having real in-the-flesh sex - will we lock her up, too? If the law is written to consider the mere image of sexuality to be criminal, it's only logical that eventually the real thing will be outlawed, too.

As a society we cannot keep allowing lawmakers to interfere with our personal lives, to not only take away civil liberties, but parental rights as well. The "nanny state" mentality has really run amok.

Wrong and Wronger

The Columbus Dispatch this morning reports that Rep. Ron Maag, a Republican from Lebanon, Ohio, is crafting a bill to make "sexting" a first class misdemeanor. Specifically, the bill targets only those under 18, outlawing the "exchange and possession of nude materials between minors."

Wake up, people in Ohio. Lawmakers are targeting your children. Make no mistake - any law which criminalizes teen sexuality not only is harmful to children, it is harmful to families, and to society as a whole. It puts parental responsibility directly into the hands of the government.

Never mind that these same children are engaging in sexual intercourse and every other type of human sexual behavior that you can imagine. Oral sex, anal sex, group sex, unprotected sex, lesbian sex, gay sex - you name it, your kids are doing it because they are human and possess strong sex drives.

So now you want to charge them with crimes for mere photos?

The answer here is to EDUCATE children, not to criminalize them. Teach them to be responsible with their sexuality, teach them to wear condoms, take the birth control pill, not to sleep around, to respect their bodies, and the bodies of others. Making the human body a crime not only sends the wrong message, it further alienates this generation from the hysterical adults that don't understand them. In fact, the adults are not even trying to understand, they are only capable of knee-jerk reactions.

A misdemeanor for merely exchanging and possessing nude materials means that any teen with a National Geographic magazine, or a Playboy, or even an art book, could be charged with a crime. And is there a teenager alive that has not surfed for porn on a computer? This proposed law is beyond stupid, it's downright insane.

Maag also noted the suicide last summer of 18-year-old Jessica Logan, who sent a nude picture of herself to her boyfriend that was later spread throughout her Cincinnati-area high school. She was harassed daily at school by a group of girls.

Jessica's mother, Cynthia Logan, has taken Jessica's story on a national campaign to alert teens of the dangers and implications of "sexting."

Maag said, "I think what these teens need is education about how this type of behavior could affect their lives."

It was inevitable that lawmakers would latch onto this tragic story and turn it into political capital. Maureen Kanka, the mother of the girl who inspired Megan's Law, has come out against the criminalization of sexting, saying that prosecutors are harming children instead of helping them. Teen suicide is a real problem, and a complicated issue, but does anyone really believe that adding legal consequences on top of the problems already piled on our kids' backs is the answer?

Adults are always taking about the dire consequences of sexting. Well, those consequences are all legal, and man made. We need to UNDO these laws which make criminals out of our kids, and not create new laws which only further serve to complicate the matter.

Debra J. Dickerson at Mother Jones has weighed in on the issue.

Why is it illegal to take/send someone dirty pictures of you, whatever your age? Granted, I will break my kids arms if/when I catch them doing something so stupid—and I certainly wish young girls, especially, wouldn't disrespect themselves this way. But a crime, a sex crime?...I'm so confused: Who are the minors being sexually abused? Unless the photos were taken without the consent of the subject, I don't see the criminal justice issue. To this DA, possession of a dirty photo of yourself is a crime. To me, it's just really, really stupid.

First of all, we need to get away from calling these "dirty" pictures. We have all these incendiary words - dirty, lurid, pornographic, lewd, obscene, smutty, bawdy, raunchy, vulgar, nasty - to describe nude photos. Throw all these words around when talking about teen sexuality and you will get people all riled up.

However you feel about teen sexting, whether you think it's just a technological manifestation of normal young sexuality, or if it's the work of the devil, think hard and long about if you really want this made into a prosecutable crime against your child. Think about if you want law enforcement officers storming into schools and confiscating cell phones, raiding lockers, rifling through backpacks, just to track down a nude photo. Once this is made a real crime, then police with search warrants will be able to come into the privacy of your own home looking for nude photos under your kids' beds.

Think, America, if this is what you really want.

• Columnist Jennifer Parello is approached by a harsh critic while nude in a locker room.
• A Chinese woman is flashing her lopsided breasts outside a hospital to protest her botched implants.
• A woman wearing a bikini top was booted from an Australian shopping mall because security thought she was wearing a bra.
• A divorced father of three boys writes to an advice columnist because he's concerned about the nudity they found to be "cool" on a beach vacation with their mother and her boyfriend. Instead of reassuring him that nudity on many beaches is a cultural norm, "Ellie" offers the following bad advice:

  Obviously, if you ever believe your children are being neglected or abused, you should legally object, and protect your sons in every way possible. BUT, regarding different values, your recourse depends on your keeping open good lines of communication, both with your sons and your ex.

• A British naturist club has found a new home at a public pool.

  Malcolm Boura, 56, one of the club's founders and a naturist for more than 30 years, said:"It's only a minority of people who misunderstand what naturism is about. Evidence from polls show that clearly the public in general understand.
  
  "We had one or two hiccups when we started in Mildenhall. But the council, which ran the pool at the times, was very helpful and very supportive and we had remarkably little difficulty."

• The Springfield Foundation in Ohio has requested that a painting of a nude woman by Jerry Ott be removed from the Springfield Museum of Art for their annual meeting.

  "We have a conservative donor base," explained Ted Vander Roest, the foundation's executive director. "We felt it wouldn't be to their liking.
  
  "Some of them are in their 80s."

• Students at the University of Iowa will host their first annual Nearly Naked Mile on Saturday, March 7, where runners remove layers of clothing for charity.
• Beer, floats and nudity have been banned from this year's Bay to Breakers run in San Francisco, but police said they will not issue citations for indecent exposure.
• Two Wisconsin teens face municipal citations for exchanging nude photos of themselves. Police are calling it "kids making poor choices", but the article does not state specifically what the charges are.
• That nude photo of Madonna sold for $37,500.
• Parents like this one need to start fighting back against porn charges when their kids are caught sexting.

  Brian Hunt told the Cape Cod Times that the Lawrence School students, ranging in age from 12 to 14, have "learned their lesson," and that media reports of the incident have been overblown.
  
  "They're all good kids," he said. "But they are young. A 13-year-old did what a 13-year-old did. They all knew that they weren't supposed to do it."

• The video of Salma Hayek breastfeeding another woman's baby has cast a light on the USA and its unique phobia about breastfeeding issues.
